Ira Mitchell-Kirk Ira Mitchell Kirk’s art is bright, bold and bordering on the abstract. She is enthusiastic about life which is evident in her work. The time Ira spends painting transports her to another place and emotional space. Born in the mountain town of Queenstown, New Zealand, Ira grew up enjoying nature and spending time in the outdoors which often features in her work.

Being a mother of three, part time teacher and artist ensures her days are full to overflowing with activity and love. Again, this lifestyle features in her work, and the juggling act it takes to manage it all. Finding her new husband was an adventure as was being a single parent, these are all subjects Ira paints about.

Ira about Ira

My name is Ira Mitchell-Kirk, a Christchurch artist. My paintings are impressionist in style, with details of willowy people who reflect my thoughts and life experiences.
I enjoy the freedom of broad brush strokes, creating an atmosphere and fantasy world of my own.

I have a BFA in design from Canterbury University, a Diploma in Visual Communications from The Southern Institute of Technology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching, also from Canterbury. When I’m not painting, I’m teaching in Christchurch high schools.

I have been painting since childhood, always enjoying the process and the indulgence of escaping to my own world through my art. Each work is piece of me, as I include my thoughts and experiences as I travel through this roller coaster of life. My children, relationships, struggles, joys and just people watching are a constant source of inspiration.
